Best places to eat in Salem, MA

Writer: Jessie MemmoloJessie Memmolo

I would not consider myself a foodie, but I would consider myself someone who loves food. I lived in Salem throughout my college years and one of the best parts about going to school there was the food!

Starting with breakfast

The Ugly Mug would have to be the best breakfast, with Red's Kitchen and Tavern coming in close second. the Ugly Mug is on the pricey side, but their unique meals, drinks, and aesthetics make it worth it. Red's is on the cheaper side and is cash only, but the amount of food you get and the large venue make it a perfect place for large families and hungover college students! If you are not a fan of a large breakfast then Front street cafe is the place to go! They also has unique lattes and drinks on their menu, and their lounge like cafe is so comfortable.

Moving along to my new favorite meal is Brunch!

Over the past few years Salem has become a huge fan of brunch. With two popular restaurants serving brunch on Sunday's, it is hard to choose. Sea Level Oyster bar and The Derby both offer brunch options as well as there lunch menu. Sea Level has been open since April of 2015 and has been kicking the food industries butt since then. The Derby is a newer restaurant that has been intriguing customers with its incredible social media feeds and even more intriguing menu. Both restaurants are worth the try. With the Coronavirus still in amidst, I would call any of these restaurants or check their websites before making plans.

Still Hungry? Let's grab lunch!

Lunch and dinner are the easiest to recommend because there are two restaurants that steal the show, Finz and the Howling Wolf taqueria. These are completely different restaurants so I can't say if one is better than the other, but they are both incredible! If you like seafood, sushi and fun spins on classic dishes, Finz is the perfect place for you. If Mexican is more your style then you must go to the Howling Wolf! I highly recommend the fried avocado tacos!

Finally..Dessert!

Treadwell's ice cream is the best ice cream in Salem/Peabody, but if you travel about 10 minutes away to Marblehead you can eat ice cream that is more than just a sweet treat. At Terry's ice cream you can get the famous Richardson's ice cream with warm cookie dough on top of it. I don't know about you, but there is nothing that sounds better than that. If ice cream isn't you thing then Goodnight Fatty is what you need. Goodnight Fatty is a cookie experience. This cookie place is only open on the weekends and at night, so expect a line! And if cookies are not for you and something more classy is up your alley then I would suggest Caramel Patisserie. This is a classic french bakery with all the sweets you could hope for.

I hope some of these places and descriptions have made you hungry for good food and patience for a long car ride. Salem may be the place to be, but driving there is always a challenge especially in October. So get hungry, not hangry because you will want to bring some friends with you if you're going down this edible path.
